Test Results for Add-Ons from ca-archive

Latest change 2019-05-07 06:30 { Color Tab |  Google Search by Image WebToPDF 12.11 | pdf creator 0.1.9 | PDF Download 3.0.0.2.1 | EcosiaLinkChecker | PDF Mage1.0.3heavens-above | Save as PDF | R-kiosk }

Here I will publish results of (very) short tests of my tests for add-ons from Classic Add-ons Archive with SeaMonkey, until we will have found a better place.

  • 👎 Color Tab 0.2.3 [converted] by Wildsky  — I did not get it working with my SeaMonkey 2.53. Installation without problems, appears in Add-Ons-Manager, but does nothing (to be honest, I don’t know which effect can be expected from description ” … will let your boring new-tab page provide some beautiful color sets …”.
  • 👍 Ecosia 3.4.5  [converted] — The search engine that plants trees!  (by Ecosia development team)
Installation of the converted add-on adds Ecosia to Search Sidebar Panel as currently active search engine. The results of a small sample look very similar to DuckDuckGo, but I read that the results are from bing. The search engine is really useful for me. Here you find some hints on Wikipedia.
  • Link Checker 0.2d.1-signed.1-signed by ViJo
currently I do not know whether that very old (2010!) add-on does work or does not.

  • 👍 I am using LinkChecker [converted] version 0.6.7.1 by Kevin Freitas, which works fine. Unfortunately I do not know a source for it, the Web page is dead. May be you want to try download from chip.de?

  • 👎 PDF Mage 1.0.3  (No Restart) by PDF Mage
I did not get it working with my SeaMonkey 2.53, no button to start the PDF creation offered, also not when I tried to add one using context menu ‘customize’.

  • 👎 pdf creator 0.1.9
Installation works fine after conversion, but I can’t find out how to use the add-on. I don’t find any new context menu entry, button or similar.
  • MeasureIt

👍 MeasureIt 0.4.15 by Kevin Freitas: After conversion add-on installs and works fine with WIN SM2.53 (separate User Profile for tests). Creates a launch icon for the add-on in the SM Navigation Toolbar. After click on icon you can mark a rectangle on the screen, dimensions in px will appear. I haven’t a clue for what I should need that, but it works.

  • 👎 PDF Download 3.0.0.2.1-signed.1-signed
Can not be used any longer with any browser, required infrastructure does no longer exist. pdfdownload.org hat become part of the Nitro Family.

  • R-Kiosk

    👍 R-kiosk 0.9.0.1-signed.1-signed by Kimmo Heinaaro
After conversion add-on installs and works fine with WIN SM2.53 (separate User Profile for tests). After relaunch of SeaMonkey the browser will be in “Kiosk Mode”, no Menu Bar, no Navigation bar or similar is available. But it is not a perfect Kiosk, Sidebar is still active, so that Bookmarks, search and so on still can be used. May be you should disable Sidebar before relaunch?
⚠️ R-kiosk only can be disabled after SeaMonkey Browser has been launched in Safe mode.

  • Save as PDF Screenshot

👍 Save as PDF 1.5.1-signed.1-signed by Pdfcrowd Team
After conversion add-on installs and works fine with WIN SM2.53 (separate User Profile for tests). After relaunch of SeaMonkey the browser will show a Save as PDF — Icon at the right end of the navigation Toolbar. Works fine, PDF- results look very similar to source page, contain working hyperlinks, what makes those PDF documents much more useful that the output of printer solutions like FreePDF (my one might be outdated).
But unfortunately there also are pages where the results of this add-on are completely unusable, for example heavens-above.com/skychart2. Result here!

  • 👍 WebToPDF 12.11
After conversion installation works fine. The add-on adds a new item to context menu for rightclick on web page contents with several sub items. I tested ‘Safe as PDF’, works fine. Result is only graphic, no text search, hyperlinks, … . For me that is not very useful. PDF export for this page see 190201_TestResultsForAddOnsFrom_ca-archive_ SeaMonkey InternetSuite! If such graphic export is all you need the tool offers a quick and simple solution.

  • 👍 Google Search by Image 0.3.1-signed.1-signed [converted] works fine. The add-on adds an Item to the context menu which appears when you click on an image on a web page. The search results differ a little from the ones Google Image Search does find, my tests were not intensive enough to tell whether there migt be an adventage for one of the add-ons. For the shown image i got this with Google Search by Image and this with Google Image Search.

For your own results please leave a comment including a link to a screenshot, I will move your results from Comment to this blogpost.

Classic Add-ons Archive

One possible solution for the “Many old type Firefox addons lost!” — problem (all FF-CLASSIC-addons dropped from AMO without having moved them to new repository) might be the:

Classic Add-ons Archive

After some trouble I managed to install it to SeaMonkey, but I doubt that it works. I observed 10 minutes of database provisioning …  without visible progress. I hope it will be possible to fix that.

I will keep you up to date here.

Many old type Firefox addons lost!

This blog post in German languagecompat1“Houston, we have had a problem” —  AMO Browsing for SeaMonkey and addon converter have become useless —  more or less 😡

For details see Bug 1517828 Firefox add-ons no longer available for SeaMonkey.

This means that lots of add-ons which where compatible with SeaMonkey after conversion no longer can be installed.

We will need the FF-addons without Webextensions successor versions on the new addon repository!

AMO Browsing for SeaMonkey: New Version 0.9.17rc1 with enhancements tested successfully

compat1After repair version 0.9.16 Isaac Schemm now created a new  version 0.9.17 with some enhancements. RC is available for testing on github, release will be available on AMO, soon,

I did several tests with unzipped installer of official en-US SeaMonkey 2.53a1 (NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0 Build 20170706013410 (Default Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit and checked various functions, which were broken before. For these tests I used some Add-Ons from compatibility list. If you want to do tests directly from AMO, you will have to select an Other Application like Firefox; from the AMO SeaMonkey Area search will only show add-ons which are compatible with SeaMonkey. The FF-AMO-Area already show the new AMO design.

I did my tests from AMO FF Area.

  • 👍 Suppress”FF-Only” button, tested with BlockSite from Search Results list.
    • ✅ [+ Add To FF] or similar button  will be suppressed in search result list (which shows old AMO design) an replaced by “Convert this add-on here” – links.
    • ✅ On add-on download page [+ Add To FF] button is replaced by Convert Add-on link.
    • ✅ Conversion link in added explication text works fine
  • 👍 Useful Text for add-ons built with WebExtensions, which can’t be used with SeaMonkey and which can’t be converted with Add-On-Converter — tested with LEO Dictionaries 3.0 (and YouTube a MP3 1.0.6)
    • ✅ Adds explication to AMO web page for add-on
      • ✅ check previous versions – link works fine

        Convert Previous Version

        • ✅ Conversion link on previous versions page (replaces [+ Add to Firefox]) works fine
  • 👍 Find SeaMonkey Version of add-on — Tested with Lightning 5.4
    • SeaMonkey version of this add-on exists!– link is available and works fine, finds SM version

Did I forget something? All functions I tested worked fine

@Isaac: Thank you for great work.

AMO Browsing for SeaMonkey: repaired Version 0.9.16a1 available for tests

compat1Unfortunately after several changes on AMO website the add-on tool AMO Browsing for SeaMonkey did not work any longer. For Details please see “Bug 1389022 “AMO Browsing for SeaMonkey” does not work any longer!

But there are great news, created some fixes, which now are in an unofficial AMO Browsing for SeaMonkey test version 0.9.16a1.

For these tests I used some Add-Ons from compatibility list.

  • 👍 Replace “FF-Only” button by [Check if SeaMonkey version is available] — Tested with BlockSite
    • ✅ SM button is available
    • ✅ After search focus returns to FF add-on because no SM version of add-on does exist
    • ✅ Conversion link in added explication text works fine

        Convert Previous Version

        • ✅ Conversion link on previous versions page (replaces [+ Add to Firefox] works fine

Did I forget something? All functions I tested worked fine

Add-On “PrefBar” crashes SeaMonkey 2.52 ⚠️️

One of my favorite add-ons crashes latest SeaMonkey Trunk-Builds like

UNofficial (by FRG) en-US SeaMonkey 2.52a1 (NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:55.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/55.0 Build 20170513191754 (Default Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit

When I launch SeaMonkey it crashes immediately if PrefBar add-on is active.

The problem is not Win64; x64 related.

Bugs:

Can someone confirm the problem❔

Any theory concerning the roots of the problem❔

New add-on: “Sidebar Add Custom Tab”

Blogpost Version 2017-02-04 15:41 UTC
This blog post in German languageAnother great tool has been added to AMO Isaac Schemm: “Sidebar Add Custom Tab“. This add-on allows to add new Sidebar Panels for showing Web Pages contents easily with few clicks.

What for?

In few moments the kitchen clock will remind me to close the toilet window.

In few moments the kitchen clock will remind me to close the toilet window.

Most web pages are not very likely for being shown in the sidebar – available width of the sidebar is too small. But some others can be really useful there. Examples:

  • You need a dictionary German Romanian for writing Email? It would be great to have a dictionary-webpage for these languages in the sidebar while you are composing an email.
  • You would like to see whether there is something new in Heise News? It would be great to have …
  • and so on

If you want to show a Web page in the sidebar until now we were reliant to Sidebar Panel repositories with “Add Panel to Sidebar”- scripts, or we had to do some sophisicated proceeding to add a sidebar panel.

Using the new add-on that can be done with few mouse clicks.

Problems

(only few trivial ones)

  • WINDOWS Focus-Loss in the moment when a new Panel becomes added.
  • Some pages (for example my WORDPRESS Reader) do not work, but that probably is a general (Sidebar-) Problem and has nothing to do with the add-on.

Misc

Did we ever have Sidebar-TABs?  I prefer to call them Panels.

Web Pages suitable for Sidebar TABs

SeaMonkey project blog
This unofficial SeaMonkey Blog
German unofficial SeaMonkey Blog
Tagesschau.de
Youtube: not optimum, but if you want to see/listen some music while you are working, it’s fine.
An egg timer like online-stopwatch.com, wich announces end of countdown with a ring tone  (may be there are better ones needing less width?)
Probably several others …

If you know additional suitable web pages or if you know additional information concerning useful sidebar contents, please leave a comment!

Websites not suitable …

Google-Calendar, Facebook,

Other useful sidebar contents:

Additional Sidebar information: I only know Ed Mullens page. Long ago there was a lot of (Netscape-) Sidebars information on DMOZ, nearby all has vanished.

If you know other useful web pages concerning SeaMonkey sidebar please leave a comment.
